The End-of-Summer Coffee Bucket List: 8 Coffee Moments to Enjoy Before Fall

There’s something about the end of summer that makes you want to squeeze just a little more out of it.

One more morning outside. One more weekend adventure. One more long drive with the windows down. And, of course, one more really good cup of coffee to go with it.

In Denver, late summer gives us the best of both worlds: warm, sunny days are still hanging around, but cooler mornings are starting to hint that fall is on its way. Before pumpkin-spice season officially takes over, there are a few quintessential summer coffee moments worth checking off your list.

Consider this your end-of-summer coffee bucket list.

1. Have Your Morning Coffee Outside

If you’ve been drinking your morning coffee at your desk, in the car, or while getting ready, give it a change of scenery.

Take your cup outside and actually sit for a few minutes. A patio, balcony, front porch, backyard, or sunny café table all count.

Late-summer mornings in Denver are practically made for this. The air is a little cooler, the sun is still warm, and you can enjoy your coffee without needing three layers and a pair of gloves.

Bonus points if you leave your phone inside.

2. Pair Coffee With a Colorado Sunrise

Colorado gets plenty of attention for its sunsets, but sunrise deserves a spot on the summer bucket list too.

Wake up a little earlier than usual, grab your favorite coffee, and find a good spot to watch the morning begin. You don’t need to turn it into a major excursion. The goal is simply to slow down long enough to enjoy two very good things at the same time: a fresh cup of coffee and a Colorado morning.

And yes, coffee tastes approximately 37% better when mountains are involved.

We can’t scientifically prove that last part, but we stand by it.

3. Get a Coffee for the Road

There are few combinations more reliable than a summer road trip and a good coffee in the cup holder.

Whether you’re heading into the mountains for the weekend, visiting friends, or simply taking the scenic route somewhere, make the coffee stop part of the ritual.

For longer drives, an iced coffee or cold brew can be especially refreshing. Just remember the other important road-trip beverage: water. Colorado’s dry climate and higher elevation make hydration particularly important, coffee or no coffee.

4. Have a Post-Hike Coffee

You packed the water. You packed the snacks. You remembered the sunscreen.

But what about the post-hike coffee?

There’s something especially satisfying about sitting down with a coffee after spending a few hours on the trail. It’s a chance to cool down, refuel, and relive the parts of the hike that were beautiful, hilarious, or significantly steeper than the trail description led you to believe.

Coffee doesn’t always have to kick off the adventure. Sometimes it’s the reward at the end. And if you’re wondering what to order for your next outing, check out our guide to Coffee Orders for Every Colorado Summer Adventure for a few ideas.

5. Try Something You Normally Wouldn’t Order

If your coffee order has been exactly the same since 2019, this is your sign to shake things up.

Try a different brewing method. Order your usual drink iced instead of hot. Give cold brew a shot. Try a new flavor combination. If you normally order something sweet, go simpler and pay attention to the flavors in the coffee itself.

You don’t have to abandon your favorite order forever. Trying different coffee drinks is simply a great way to discover flavors, textures, and brewing styles you might not otherwise experience.

Worst-case scenario? You confirm that your regular order really is your regular order for a reason.

6. Turn a Coffee Run Into a Coffee Catch-Up

Some of the best coffee experiences aren’t really about the coffee.

Text the friend you’ve been meaning to see. Invite a coworker away from the office for a bit. Catch up with someone you haven’t talked to all summer. Instead of saying, “We should get coffee sometime,” actually put it on the calendar.

Coffee shops have long been places where people come together to talk, connect, and share ideas, a tradition that has shaped the social evolution of coffeehouses for centuries. A shared cup gives us an excuse to continue that tradition by sitting down, slowing down, and connecting without needing to plan an elaborate outing.

Sometimes an hour over coffee is exactly the reset you need.

7. Learn One New Thing About the Coffee in Your Cup

You drink it all the time, but how much do you actually know about coffee?

Before summer ends, get curious about what’s in your cup.

Find out where your coffee beans were grown. Learn what the roast level means. Compare two different origins. Ask your barista about a drink or brewing method you’ve always wondered about. You can also explore the National Coffee Association’s guide to all things coffee to learn more about what goes into the cup you drink every day.

Coffee can vary enormously depending on where the beans are grown, how they’re processed, how they’re roasted, and how the final cup is brewed. Once you start paying attention to those differences, your everyday cup gets a lot more interesting.

8. Do Absolutely Nothing While You Drink a Cup of Coffee

This might be the hardest item on the entire list.

No email. No commute. No scrolling. No multitasking. No drinking half a cup and discovering the other half cold two hours later.

Just coffee.

Summer has a habit of filling itself with trips, events, activities, projects, and plans. Before the season wraps up, give yourself one coffee break that is actually a break.

Sit somewhere comfortable. Drink it while it’s still hot (or cold). Enjoy it.

That’s it.

How Many Can You Check Off?

You don’t need a plane ticket or an elaborate itinerary to squeeze a little more fun out of the final days of summer. Sometimes it’s as simple as changing where, when, or with whom you drink your next cup of coffee.

So take your coffee onto the patio. Bring it along for an early-morning adventure. Order something completely different. Meet up with someone you haven’t seen in a while. Or just sit down and enjoy a cup without doing anything else.
